EDGING

Edging is an essential step in giving your lawn a finished and manicured look.  Those neighbor's lawns that we all love to admire nearly always display definable barriers between yard, walkways and flower or garden beds. Bed "edging" can be permanent, decorative and economical using natural stones or logs or invisible using such methods as plastic, aluminum or even wood strips. Plastic edging can be effortlessly installed around a planting bed bordering grass using a power edger to first dig a trench in which to insert the product. Not only will defining that border result in a visually pleasing improvement in your lawn, it will maximize weed control by preventing weeds from sending out runners, poking their heads through, and keep your mulch where intended in those planting beds. It also is easiest to maintain as with other methods power weed trimming is usually necessary later. The power edger also will cut existing runners as it is used.  Another important technique for that "manicured" effect is making a clean cut around the perimeter of your yard against sidewalks and curbs.

Edging can be accomplished with various methods from a basic shovel to electric and gas powered edgers. If you use power equipment it is important to remove rocks and debris first and ALWAYS wear safety equipment including goggles.
