POWER RAKING

A healthy, vibrant lawn requires adequate water, oxygen, nutrients and the correct level of microbial activity in its soil. A thatch layer is an accumulation of roots, crowns, and clippings that creates a dense mat which acts like a heat insulator and retains and holds in moisture.  But, when this layer of thatch becomes too thick, exceeding 1/2", it can begin to prevent moisture, nutrients and oxygen from reaching the soil decreasing the lawn's ability to thrive. Raking or Dethatching is the mechanical process that removes this thatch, best done in early spring before "greening" or late fall. You can do this by hand with a traditional rake, or much more effortlessly with a Power Rake and attached bagger. It is very important that the blades of your comber are not set too deep and you begin to till the soil as this will damage the lawn. Once the thatch is removed, air, water, fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides can do their job. Your lawn will become healthier and more resistant to insect damage and desease. Dethatching at regular intervals promotes dense growth and ensures a vibrant lawn.
