REMOVING
WALLPAPER
Exposure to chemicals and a significant mess can be avoided using a professional
steamer to soften wallpaper paste. All power outlets in the room or wall you are
doing should be turned off as they could get wet from condensed water dripping
from the plate. Safety goggles and rubber gloves are also recommended. And
it's very handy to have a cookie sheet or cake pan available to lay the hot
plate on.
Before
you start, the wallpaper must be scored properly, making crisscross pattern cuts
with a scoring tool. Fill the steamer's tank with water, attach the hose and
hand held plate and plug it in. Once the steam starts to pump, it's ready to
use. The steamer is hot, so be careful. Hold the plate against the wallpaper
until the paste becomes soft, steaming a small portion at a time before scraping
it off. As soon as the glue loosens from the steam use a putty knife or scraper
to remove the paper being careful not to damage the wall surface. Clean the
excess glue from the wall with warm water, detergent and a sponge. Do not
repaper or paint until the walls are completely dry.
