SEEDING Spring lawns suffering from thin or bare patches or those without grass can benefit from "overseeding" techniques. Many people are unaware that a Power Seeder exists and can save a great deal of time and manual labor and produce the lawn you are looking for. Instead of tilling, raking, broadcasting seed, and then raking once again to cover the seed you have spread, there is a machine that does this for you in one step. You simply fill the hopper with seed and run the machine over your lawn in perpendicular rows much like a mower. Once finished you make a second application of perpendicular passes at a 45 degree angle to the first. The hopper drops a measured amount of seed into precisely aligned trenches in the soil prepared by the action of rotating knife blades. As the seeder moves forward, a flap smoothes the soil to cover the seed and aids germination. You will notice a distinct crosshatch pattern in the soil when finished. Then use a lawn roller as a finishing touch. Water thoroughly as soon as seeding is complete and lightly each day until the seed germinates. When the grass sprouts water it regularly to encourage deeper growth. S22
